3 Tips for Avoiding Dangerous surf

Compared to many #extreme sports, surfing involves less #risk of injury because when you fall, you are dropping into water, rather than crashing into hard terrain. But that doesn't mean it isn't without its risks. Here are three ways you can keep yourself safe while learning to surf.

1. Evaluate the waves before you paddle out.

Many beginners tend to paddle out closest to where they parked their car, but a lot can be gained by taking a moment to evaluate the waves you are about to #paddle into. Is that wave 10 feet tall and smashing? Are there no other surfers in sight? Has the lifeguard posted signs warning about potential rip tides? Taking the extra time to check for these things can save you a lot of time and heartache.

2. Is the ocean floor made of sand or reef?

While most wipeouts drop you into the water, it's only a matter of time before a wave pushes you all the way to the bottom. Connecting with sand isn't that big of a deal, but if the ocean floor you're surfing over consists of #coral #reefs or jagged #rocks, you might be in for some cuts and bruises that you weren't expecting. Especially if you didn't prepare and wear a pair of reef shoes. For the safest session, stick with #beaches that offer a sandy #ocean floor.

3. Cover your head.

Anytime you drop beneath the surface of the #water, you are going to lose track of two things. Where your #surfboard is, and the other surfers are around you. If you emerge from the water and your board has floated over your head, or another surfer has caught the wave behind yours, a collision could be imminent. It's always a smart idea to cover your face with your forearms before popping up to the surface... just in case!
