How to Plan the Perfect 4th of July Weekend at Santa Monica Beach

The Local's Guide to 4th of July Weekend at Santa Monica Beach

By Lucas Coleman, Founder of Calibunga Surf Lessons — Santa Monica Beach, Lifeguard Tower 26

Most people planning a 4th of July trip to Santa Monica make the same mistake: they spend the entire weekend on the pier. And look — the Santa Monica Pier is iconic. It's worth your time. But if the pier is all you do, you've missed what makes this place special.

I've lived and worked on Santa Monica Beach for years. I run Calibunga Surf Lessons out of Lifeguard Tower 26 in the Ocean Park neighborhood, and the 4th of July is one of the biggest weekends of our entire year. I've watched thousands of tourists come through, and the ones who have the best time are always the ones who go slightly off-script.

This is that script.

Why Santa Monica Is One of the Best 4th of July Destinations in California

Santa Monica on the 4th of July is unlike anywhere else in the state. You've got sandy beaches, the Pacific Ocean, miles of flat bike path, world-class surf, outdoor dining, walkable neighborhoods, and a sunset that will make you question every life decision that led you somewhere landlocked.

The other thing people don't realize until they get here: you can spend the entire holiday weekend without touching your car. No driving between spots, no hunting for parking, no sitting in traffic. Everything is walkable or bikeable. On a weekend when LA traffic becomes genuinely unhinged, that is not a small thing.

Start the Weekend on Friday — Take a Surf Lesson Before the Crowds Hit

If you're coming in for the holiday weekend, Friday morning is your secret weapon. The beach is still relatively calm, the energy is building, and it's the perfect time to do something that will set the tone for the entire trip — take a surf lesson.

At Calibunga Surf Lessons, we teach at Lifeguard Tower 26 in Ocean Park, which sits roughly halfway between the Santa Monica Pier and the Venice Pier. It's one of the most beginner-friendly stretches of beach in Los Angeles — and I'd argue within 90 miles. The waves are forgiving, the vibe is local, and there's actual space to breathe even when the rest of the beach is wall-to-wall people.

Getting in the water together — whether you're coming with friends, family, a couple, or a bachelor or bachelorette group — changes the energy of the whole weekend. You come out of that session loose, stoked, and ready for anything.

By Saturday and Sunday the beach is packed. Friday is your window.

After Surfing: Skip the Pier Restaurants and Head to Main Street

You're going to be hungry after your session. Here's what not to do: walk back to the pier and eat at one of the chain restaurants. The real estate on the pier is so expensive that only corporate groups can afford it. The food is fine. The experience is forgettable.

Instead, walk or bike over to Main Street in Ocean Park. This is one of Santa Monica's best-kept secrets from tourists — a genuine neighborhood strip with mom-and-pop restaurants, great coffee, and patio dining that actually feels like California. The pier feels like a theme park. Main Street feels like a place where people actually live.

Rent a Bike and Ride the Beach Path — One of the Best Things You Can Do All Weekend

Santa Monica sits at the top of one of the greatest urban bike paths in the country. From here you can ride all the way south through Venice, Marina del Rey, and on toward Manhattan Beach and Hermosa Beach — flat, paved, and right along the water the entire way.

Bike rentals are everywhere along the path. A lot of hotels like Loews and Shutters also offer complimentary bike rentals for guests. Beyond being a great afternoon activity, the bike path is your smartest logistical move of the weekend. Parking in Santa Monica on the 4th of July is brutal. Uber surge pricing after the fireworks is brutal. A bike solves both problems.

The Santa Monica 4th of July Parade — The Most Underrated Event of the Weekend

Here's something most tourists have no idea exists: Santa Monica has its own annual 4th of July parade, and it's genuinely great.

It runs along Main Street every year, kicking off at 9:30 AM at Pico Boulevard. Floats, musicians, community groups, local performers — it's a real neighborhood parade in the best sense. Locals plan around it. Visitors stumble into it and end up calling it a highlight of the trip.

The parade isn't heavily marketed to tourists. It's a local thing, which is exactly what makes it worth going to. Grab a coffee, find a curbside seat, and spend the morning watching Santa Monica show up for itself. Streets along the parade route close from 6 AM to noon, so plan accordingly if you're driving.

The Santa Monica Pier and Pacific Wheel on the 4th of July

Yes, go to the pier. Just don't only go to the pier.

During 4th of July weekend, the Pacific Wheel — the iconic solar-powered Ferris wheel on the end of the pier over the water — lights up in full red, white, and blue, including an animated 130-foot American flag display. It runs from dusk until 12:30 AM from July 3rd through July 7th. Sunset at the pier on the 4th is one of the most photogenic moments you will ever experience in Los Angeles.

Where to Watch Fireworks Near Santa Monica on the 4th of July

This is the question everyone asks first, and the answer surprises people: Santa Monica does not host its own public fireworks show.

The best fireworks near Santa Monica are in Marina del Rey. The annual show launches from the south jetty at 9 PM, synchronized to music at Burton Chace Park and Fisherman's Village. It's the biggest westside fireworks event in Los Angeles.

Here's the local tip that will save your night: do not drive there. Parking is a multi-hour ordeal and leaving is somehow worse. Rent a bike in Santa Monica and ride the beach path straight down. Twenty-five minutes, you arrive relaxed, and you leave the same way while everyone else is gridlocked.

Hidden Local Spots: Where Santa Monica Actually Goes After Dark on the 4th

Once the sun goes down, one spot worth knowing about is Bell's Beach House — a tiki-themed bar and restaurant that most tourists walk right past. Earlier in the evening it's a great dinner spot. Later on, tables get pushed aside and it turns into exactly what you want on a holiday night — strong tiki drinks, occasional live music or a DJ, and a huge patio that backs right up to the sand. Local, fun, and just hard enough to find that it still feels like a secret.

The Practical Stuff: Parking, Timing & Getting Around

Arrive before 9 AM if you're driving — parking is gone by mid-morning. Take the Metro Expo Line to Downtown Santa Monica if you want to skip the car entirely. Ride the bike path everywhere. Personal fireworks are illegal in Santa Monica and enforced. And if you wake up to gray skies, don't panic — the marine layer burns off by midday and the afternoon will be gorgeous.
